Most nonprofits don’t have a donor pipeline. They have a donor plateau.
People give once…
maybe twice…
and then they stay right there.
No deeper engagement. No stronger relationship. No meaningful growth. Not because they don’t care—But because no one showed them how to go further.
Over time, I’ve noticed something: Donors don’t just “upgrade.”
They progress.
I call this the “Donor to Stakeholder Pathway”:
→ First Inquiry or Contact
They're curious and wish to learn more.
→ First Gift
A moment of belief.
→ Repeat Donor
A question being asked: “Was that meaningful?”
→ Engaged Supporter
They start paying attention. Opening. Reading. Showing up.
→ Advocate
Now they’re sharing your work. Bringing others in.
→ Stakeholder
They feel a sense of ownership in our impact. They invest more—because it feels like theirs, too.
Here’s where most organizations get stuck: They communicate the same way at every stage.
Same messages.
Same tone.
Same expectations.
But progression requires intentional shifts:
Attract attention → Reinforce trust → Deepen connection → Invite ownership
Without that? Even your best donors stay casual.
And your biggest opportunities… never fully develop.
So here’s something worth thinking about: If you mapped your donors today—how many are truly moving forward…and how many are just standing still?
